Last week, we journeyed to the Canary Islands in search of additional pilot models for BiodivEarth. The islands are a hub of inspiring initiatives, and two models particularly caught our attention: a sustainable fishing approach, designed and led by fishermen on El Hierro, and a land stewardship program in La Palma supporting community-led conservation efforts.
These new models complement the sites already involved in BiodivEarth, including regenerative agriculture initiatives in Menorca and marine protected no-take zones in Gyaros, Cyclades. Together, they would greatly enrich the Community of Practice we are building to support local stewards of biodiversity-rich landscapes and seascapes.
During our visit, we connected with a range of local partners, including Fundación César Manrique, anthropologists from La Laguna University, community fishermen in El Hierro, biosphere reserves in La Palma and Lanzarote, and fishing authorities from both central and regional administrations.
A heartfelt thank you to our colleagues at WWF Spain, especially Beatriz Ayala in the Canary Islands, and to all the local partners who welcomed us and organized such an insightful and inspiring field visit!
