Gyaros: Important recognition of our work by the EU

Gyaros: Important recognition of our work by the EU

After more than 12 years of dedicated effort, the installation and operation of an integrated remote monitoring system for the Gyaros Marine Protected Area (MPA) has been acknowledged by the European Union as a good practice example at the European level.

This multi-layered initiative was managed by our team from the initial design phase through installation and effectiveness evaluation, and ultimately handed over to the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA) for the continued management of the MPA.

Further details are available in the two Good Practice Guides, which present the key conclusions and lessons learned from over a decade of involvement in the Gyaros area: https://wwf-odigoi.gr/

This recognition serves as concrete validation that collaboration, innovation, and long-term commitment to nature conservation can generate meaningful and enduring outcomes — not only for Gyaros and Greece, but across Europe.

We now look forward to the issuance of the anticipated Presidential Decree, which will establish a permanent legal protection framework and secure important benefits for both the natural environment and local communities.
